Implantable contact lens (ICL) surgery

State of the art vision correction surgery

About ICLs

Implantable contact lenses (ICL) is a removable lens implant. It is an attractive alternative to LASIK and other refractive procedures.  It helps correct the most common visual problems, myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism to provide sharp, clear vision with superb results.

99.4% of patients would have the ICL procedure again.

What is the ICL procedure

In this procedure specialised lens implants (ICL) are inserted such that the new lens sits over the natural crystalline lens inside the eye.

How the ICL Works

ICL Benefits

Removability

Implantable phakic lenses provide for long-term solutions, with the peace of mind of being completely removable.

Flexibility for the Future

Should you wish to make any changes, whether because of your prescription or otherwise, the ICL can simply be removed or replaced.

A Quick Procedure & Recovery

Your procedure should be completed within 20-30 minutes. Many patients have excellent vision immediately. Within a few days you’ll be able to get back to your normal activities with sharp, clear vision.

No Dry Eye Syndrome

Since there is minimal disruption at the surface, ICLs have minimum impact on dry eye symptoms.

Stability

ICLs treats a wide range of prescriptions, on a long term basis, without reshaping the cornea.

Established Safety

The ICL is a safe and effective treatment, and also a great alternative if you’re not suitable for laser eye surgery.

In Harmony with your natural eyes

Unlike other procedures, ICLs do not require removal of corneal tissue. The lens is biocompatible with your natural eye.

UV Protection

The ICL has UV protection properties.

The ICL procedure involves a specialised lens implant which is inserted such that the new lens sits between the coloured part of the eye (the iris) and the natural crystalline lens to correct your vision for the long term.

The thin lens enables the insertion method to be minimally invasive, optimising the procedure and recovery time dramatically.

Local anaesthesia is used to ensure the procedure is completely painless. Patients can usually expect a 20-30 minute procedure or less and most people are able to resume daily activities in just a few short days with clearer vision.

In this procedure specialised lens implants (ICL) are inserted such that the new lens sits over the natural crystalline lens inside the eye.

The Process:

Following detailed assessments and checks to confirm safety parameters, the appropriate ICL is calculated and ordered. The surgery is undertaken one side at a time or both eyes together which we will agree at the initial consultations. The whole treatment usually takes between 20 to 30 minutes. Surgery is usually performed under local anaesthesia (LA) and is completely painless for patients. General anaesthesia (GA) is available when sought. Soon after surgery, patients are free to go with prescribed eye drops to facilitate effective healing.

Regular follow up checks are undertaken to confirm appropriate healing. Despite successful surgery patients with ICL are advised to have to continue to have their eyes checked and an endothelial cell counting annually.

  • Results

Within a few days of the procedure, patients will notice being able to see well without glasses. At Eye Correction Centre, over 95% of our myopic patients achieved unaided vision of 6/6 and 99% of our patients achieved vision as good as or better than their pre-operative spectacle corrected vision following implantation of Evo Visian® ICL™.

  • Safety

As with all forms of surgical treatments there are risks of unpredictable outcomes and complications. Your consultant will discuss with you the specific risk associate with your eyes with regards to the surgery during the consultation. The risk of severe and lasting problems is very low with ICL at 1:1000 or less per eye (so both eyes getting affected is very rare indeed).

As a general rule of thumb patients can expect a 95% chance of achieving functional vision to a high standard (corresponding to their best vision potential) from their initial surgery.

As with all forms of surgical treatments there are risks of unpredictable outcomes and complications. 1 to 5% of patients may have some difficulties but in the majority of cases these can be managed. The risk of severe and lasting problems is very low at 1:2500 or less per eye (so both eyes getting affected is very rare indeed).

You will of course be given a full explanation of the specific risks and benefits of the individual procedure applicable to you at the time of the consultation.

Eye doctors are at least five times more likely as the general public to choose vision correction surgery for themselves. The study, featured in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, surveyed 250 surgeons who perform LASIK. Of those, 62.6 percent said they have already undergone LASIK to correct their vision, and 91 percent said they have done it or recommended it for their immediate family members.
