Mr Hickley is a consultant ophthalmologist at the Countess of Chester Hospital where he is the clinical lead for the Emergency Ophthalmology service. Aside from general ophthalmology and primary care he has three main surgical areas of expertise and specialist interest; oculoplastic surgery, lacrimal surgery and cataract surgery.
Along with the traditional sciences Mr Hickley studied fine-art at school and pursued this to A-level achieving the highest mark in his year. He is still a keen artist today and often tells his patients this is the best foundation-block to his career as a surgeon.
He graduated from The University of Leeds Medical School in 2009 and worked as house officer in Yorkshire before spending a year working in Cairns, Australia. He returned to the UK and took up his ophthalmology registrar training based in the Mersey region. Here he spent time working at the world-renowned St Paul’s Eye Hospital in Liverpool and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. He then completed a yearlong fellowship within training in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgery at Manchester Eye Hospital. This was followed by a further 18-month fellowship in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgery at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
