Not all eye surgeons are created equal. I chose Mr. Quah specifically because he was highly recommended by another eye surgeon in my area and separately by an optician friend, who had chosen him for his own lens replacement surgery.
I had struggled to wear contact lenses, and at work my glasses would regularly steam up when wearing a surgical mask. While working on an inboard boat engine in December, in the dark and cold, my glasses fell off several times once landing in oil. Each time it happened it was pretty hard finding them again with my restricted vision and the low light. That strengthened my resolve to find a solution.
Before the operation I had been slightly anxious about injections around the eye (there are no needles) and the eyelid retractors (which were painless). The surgical procedure (done several days apart) is incredibly slick and painless and I actually enjoyed the incredible kaleidoscopic light show you get while it is being done.
The day after the first operation, when the eye patch was removed, I had pretty perfect vision in that eye and was blown away at the difference compared to my old lens (still in my right eye at that time). With the new lens I could read the small print in the paper without glasses and recognise faces easily at a distance again. As an orthodontist I can now work 99% of the time without any glasses at all, so no more steaming up glasses or glasses slipping off my face.
Although any surgical procedure caries associated risks, you can minimise these risks by choosing a highly experienced surgeon, who uses the best lens implants available. I would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Quah if you are considering eye surgery.

As a general rule of thumb patients can expect a 95% chance of achieving functional vision to a high standard (corresponding to their best vision potential) from their initial surgery.
As with all forms of surgical treatments there are risks of unpredictable outcomes and complications. 1 to 5% of patients may have some difficulties but in the majority of cases these can be managed. The risk of severe and lasting problems is very low at 1:2500 or less per eye (so both eyes getting affected is very rare indeed).
You will of course be given a full explanation of the specific risks and benefits of the individual procedure applicable to you at the time of the consultation.
Eye doctors are at least five times more likely as the general public to choose vision correction surgery for themselves. The study, featured in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, surveyed 250 surgeons who perform LASIK. Of those, 62.6 percent said they have already undergone LASIK to correct their vision, and 91 percent said they have done it or recommended it for their immediate family members.
